We are expected our 5 year old rescue Borzoi home this afternoon following a front leg amputation only yesterday. It was great to see your website and follow Polo’s daily progress as we have no idea what to expect or how we can best help him, I am hoping the vet can advise us.
I notice he is wearing T-Shirts and various coverings and supports – Is that essential and does it make it more comfortable against his shaved skin ?
Thank you for sharing this as I have found it both useful and inspiring – especially days 10 & 11 !!
Sorry I didn’t reply when you commented–I stopped checking the blog regularly. I hope all is well, Polo is still doing well. You certainly don’t need the T-shirt advice any longer. Polo is on a low dose chemo call melphalan, trade name alkeran, he gets 4mg (2 x2mg pills) every other day. We go in monthly to check everything out. Again, my apologies for not responding. Mike.
We adopted Polo from The Emerald Coast Golden Retriever Rescue (www.ecgrr.com) in 2001. He was very skittish but happy to be us. He has been a humble and extremely loving dog since. In late Aug 2009 We asked our doctor to check out a limp during a routine teeth cleaning. It turned out to be osteosarcoma. When the Doc said "amputate" we were shocked and wondered how Polo would manage. We took some time to think about it and do some research before we decided what do. Polo's front left leg was amputated on 29 Sep 2009. He has surprised us, and continues to do so. No one told him he's missing a leg. We are so proud of him.
